In conversation with Fatima Manji

History, culture & heritage matter!

On 27 November, An-Nisa Society and Golden Threads hosted a conversation with Fatima Manji (Channel 4 News) about her book ‘Hidden Heritage’ at the Yellow in Wembley Park.

The room was packed, and the audience were gripped by Fatima’s stories from her book which show how Muslim people and empires had profound influence and a long-standing connection with England

Fatima spoke about:
🔵the introduction of coffee to England in the 1600s century from the Ottoman Empire ☕️
🔵Influence on architecture such as the Brighton Pavilion
🔵Wounded Indian soldiers treated in England during the First World War
🔵Queen Elizabeth I letters to the Ottoman Sultan
🔵Queen Victoria could speak and write some Urdu
🔵Universities in England teaching Arabic and Islamic studies from the 16th century

The best part of the evening was to see how the audience were captivated by the discussion, and joined in with very thoughtful questions and comments
