Uncovering Muslim History

Muslim Stories across History - an event for Islamophobia Awareness Month.

Positive & inspirational Muslim stories are often left out of the mainstream because of Islamophobia - I’m talking school curriculums, books, tv and films, and definitely media narratives. This affects how Muslims are perceived and treated by society.

As part of Islamophobia Awareness Month, I led a talk and discussion around historical characters and events that reveal Muslim influence and impact on the west and at the world stage.

I also discussed why these facts and stories are left out of mainstream narratives – revealing a long-standing anti-Muslim bias and hatred since the birth of Islam.

I spoke about:
⭐️ Muslim presence and influence in Europe from 1500s
⭐️Shakespeare and Islam
⭐️Historic presence of Black Muslims in the Americas from the time of the transatlantic slave trade & their legacy
⭐️Indigenous Muslim Europe- from beyond Bosnia to Albania, Macedonia, Lithuania, Poland  and Russia

Dealing with Islamophobia at an institutional basis is essential - but we also need to start by owning our stories and histories.

Thanks to the Yellow, Wembley Park and Mend.
